May 24 Interview - Steve Denning on the 21st Century Workplace and Education

Join me Tuesday, May 24th, for a live and interactive FutureofEducation.com webinar with author and consultant Stephen Denning as we discuss his most recent book, The Leader's Guide to Radical Management.  We'll discuss the imminent changes he sees in the workplace, and the impact those changes are likely to have on how we think both about educating and the educational workplace.  In the last 25 years, Steve writes, "startups created 40 million jobs in the US, while established firms created almost none."  Traditional management, he argues, is broken, and this is reflected in the fact that only 20% of workers are passionate about their jobs.  The implications of his book relate not just to how we think about teaching and learning, but also to how we organize the work and the workplaces of teachers.

Steve Denning is the author of the award-winning books, The Leader's Guide to Radical Management: Re-inventing the Workplace for the 21st Century (Jossey-Bass, 2010), The Secret Language of Leadership (Jossey-Bass, 2007) and The Leader's Guide to Storytelling (Jossey-Bass, 2005).

From 1996 to 2000, Steve was the Program Director, Knowledge Management at the World Bank where he spearheaded the organizational knowledge sharing program.  In November 2000, Steve Denning was selected as one of the world’s ten Most Admired Knowledge Leaders (Teleos).  He now works with organizations in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia on leadership, innovation, business narrative and most recently, radical management.

Steve was born and educated in Sydney, Australia. He studied law and psychology at Sydney University and worked as a lawyer in Sydney for several years. He did a postgraduate degree in law at Oxford University in the U.K. Steve then joined the World Bank where he worked for several decades in many capacities and held various management positions, including Director of the Southern Africa Department from 1990 to 1994 and Director of the Africa Region from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000, Steve was the Program Director, Knowledge Management at the World Bank.

Paul L. Kimmelman, Ed.D. is senior advisor in Education, Human Development and the Workforce (EHDW) at the American Institutes for Research. He works on federal and state policy, gives legislative updates to constituents, and makes presentations on building organizational capacity and innovation planning. In his 33 years in K–12 education, he has been a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. He has also been an adjunct professor at colleges/universities, Program Coordinator for Organizational Leadership at Argosy University, and an educational consultant.

As superintendent, Dr. Kimmelman helped the Lima, Ohio, district successfully comply with a federal desegregation order. As a superintendent in Illinois, he was President of the First in the World Consortium, recognized by President Clinton and Secretary of Education Richard Riley when they visited Illinois to announce their world-class successful work.

Dr. Kimmelman was appointed by former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley to the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century and served on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study Technical Review Panel. He was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige to serve on the Teacher Assistance Corps.

He has written numerous articles and three books on education. His most recent book is The School Leadership Triangle: From Compliance to Innovation.

Amy Sandvold is a Roman Catholic School Principal at Sacred Heart School and the soon-to-be Principal at the Blessed Maria Assunta Pallotta Middle School (open 2012) for the Cedar Valley Catholic Schools (Archdiocese of Dubuque) in Waterloo, Iowa.

Amy has served in both public and private schools in rural, urban and suburban areas. She has experience teaching Title I Reading and as a 3rd and 5th grade classroom teacher, and served as a full-time literacy coach. She has been an Education Programs & School Improvement Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education and has taught several courses at the University of Northern Iowa.
