Bernie Dodge is an education professor at San Diego State University. He is a leading thinker on how to maximize the use of the Internet for learning, and he is also the creator of WebQuests and QuestGarden - a place to author and host WebQuests.

At the MacWorld Education Symposium, he unveiled a new way to look at the power of learning games: Power = Attention x Depth x Efficiency. This is an interesting idea that has implications well beyond the gaming world.

What do you think of his equation? Is it accurate? What examples do you have to support or refute these ideas? How can we use these ideas to impact classroom instruction?

  1. The professor seems to make a very good and closely observed point and I wouldn't want to argue with that. I would also say that it could be transferred to other aspects of teaching with or without the technology.

Formula such as this one have an attraction which lead to books being written about them and educators can get 'switched on' by the power of their simplicity. However when you look closely the most important aspect of the formula is that it makes you stop and reflect on your practice. You tune into some of the most important factors of education. In my view the words used to express the formula could be replaced by other equally valid words, e.g. Power = efficacy, attention = engagement etc. But it is the process of stopping and reflecting which is the most important factor.

So not wishing to denigrate the professor's thinking, just simply pointing out that these are are some of the fundamental aspects of effective learning and teaching.

Well done for pointing them out again, we do need to have things pointed out continuously to make us ponder awhile and re-adjust our focus.

  2. Agreed, alandor! They beauty of this 5-minute talk is that it connects with what good teachers know. Because of this, I see it as being an excellent tool for helping teachers make the leap from computer as drill and practice tool to computer as serious teaching tool. Thanks, Dr. Dodge!

  3. Alandor -

Great thoughts. I don't know if Bernie's going to write a book about it, but I like the simple idea of teachers looking at what their doing and making a simple calculation to determine if powerful learning is occurring. Wouldn't it be great if this sort of calculation starting to creep into our everyday school conversations?! Today, my lesson was a 85 or 72 or 100! Very cool.

  4. Recently, I shared my insights from remaining silent for seven days straight. The silence wasn’t a choice I would have made. world of warcraft goldwow goldworld of warcraft goldwow goldworld of warcraft goldI didn’t go to a monastery and take a vow of silence as some attempt at deeper reflection.world of warcraft goldwow goldworld of warcraft goldWow gold The silence was imposed by Laryngitis. Remaining silent led me to reflect on how marketers go about getting attention.world of warcraft gold wow goldworld of warcraft goldwow gold To get attention without a voice, I had tried smiling, but when that didn’t help, I had to resort to waving my hands in an attempt to catch the peripheral vision. And, when that didn’t work, I tried whistling. world of warcraft goldwow goldworld of warcraft goldwow goldNone of which were very successful. Marketers have the same challenge. They smile nicely – nothing. They wave their hands – nothing. They whistle – and the only reaction from the consumer is annoyance. wow goldworld of warcraft goldwow goldWill we look back at some point in the not too distant future and wonder how quickly the walls between Online and Offline media eroded? wow gold
